Q:  What is an electric bicycle?

A:  An electric bike (e-bike) is a bicycle that has the ability to run on electric power, in addition to human power.  E-bikes are a new breed of cycling hybrid.  They marry the advantages of a bicycle, with those of a moped.  By and large, electric bikes are simple to use, ride, and maintain. Overall, they require little maintenance beyond that which a standard bike requires.  LEARN MORE ABOUT WHAT ARE ELECTRIC BIKE IS HERE>

Q:  How do you operate an electric bike?

A:  An electric bicycle can be used just the same as a traditional bicycle, and share all the same basic components of a regular bike.  The only difference is that an electric bicycle has a motor that can enhance your ride by giving you added power.  There are two basic ways that electric bikes are powered, throttle control and pedal assist. For throttle control, you use a throttle to control power and speed. Simply twist the throttle to accelerate and hold it to maintain speed.  Some people prefer full throttle control, since it operates just like a motorcycle with no pedaling required, though you still have the option to pedal along as well.  With “pedal assist', power is applied automatically when you pedal.  A monitor is mounted on your handlebars where you can set the level of assist that you want.  Generally there are 1-5 levels of assist that can increase your pedal power incrementally by as much as 300%.  Once you start pedaling, a sensor tells the motor to give you power. Just pedal and go. This type of riding is often described as “feeling like you have bionic legs”.  Once you use the brakes or quit pedaling, the power is deactivated and you need to pedal lightly to re-activate pedal assistance.  Another advantage of the PAS (pedal assist) e-bikes is that the monitors often include information about distance traveled, speed, battery use & more.  There are two types of pedal assist:  Cadence senor & torque sensor.  While both work well, torque sensors are far more sophisticated & expensive.  Learn more about TAG & PAS here>

Q:  Why are e-bikes becoming so popular all across America?

A:  Most barriers that often keep people from enjoying traditional cycling are all but eliminated with an e-bike.  NO FEAR of hills, headwinds, awkward intersection starts, cycling through an injury, keeping up with a partner or group, or lack of ability to go long distances.  Plus, e-bikes are just plain F-U-N!  You will be looking for excuses to ride your new e-bike.

Q:  Can I pedal an e-bike?

A:  Yes.  E-bikes operate just like a traditional bicycle, with added benefits.  How much pedaling or effort you put into e-bike riding is ALWAYS your call.  When you give it a little throttle and pedal along your legs will feel bionic.  Or, simple twist the throttle and go.  You can also choose a model with pedal assist.   Select your level of assist on the monitor and just pedal along at whatever pace you choose while the sensor tells the motor how much to help to supply.

Q:  Isn’t using an electric bike cheating?

A:  If you use your bike for competitive cycling, then yes.  Using an electric bicycle would be cheating.  However, if you want to use a bicycle as a means of transportation or recreation, much as the world outside North America does, then it becomes more of a matter of choice and convenience.

An electric bicycle can allow you to commute to work without becoming exhausted and potentially odor offensive.  Whether commuting to work, or doing errands around town, an e-bike allows you travel further with less effort, while avoiding traffic jams and parking hassles & expenses.  Of course you also save money on gas while also doing your part to help save the environment.  Electric bicycles offer people of any ability, the opportunity to spend more time outdoors cycling, without worrying about having the energy to get back home or their ability to keep up with friends or family.  If any electric bicycle can help remove obstacles, or make cycling a better experience for someone, then how is that cheating?

At the end of the day, the only thing a bicycle should be …  is used.

Q: Doesn’t an electric bicycle defeat the purpose of biking for exercise?

A:  E-bikes are very prolific throughout most of Asia & Europe, where the culture is to see bicycles as not just recreation, but transportation.  We Americans in general love our cars, and only think of bicycles as “exercise” tools.  E-bikes make cycling a practical and viable transportation solution for people of any age or ability.  E-bike riders typically use their electric bikes more that they would standard bikes, and therefore end up getting at least some exercise, whether they initially intended to or not.  Getting people outdoors and replacing car trips with bikes trips is what e-bikes are all about.

Q:  Will I get exercise on an e-bike?

A:  While it may seem counter-intuitive, people often report weight loss and improved health after purchasing an e-bike.  The truth is, if your rode a traditional bike as much as an e-bike, of course it would give you more exercise.  But, if your traditional bike has been looking more like a dust mop, then getting an e-bike will get you riding again.  Even avid cyclist report that they actually end up riding more frequently, for further distances, and for longer periods of time on an electric bike!  While you probably won't grow a six pack overnight, you can get an awesome workout from an electric bike—sometimes without even realizing it (while running errands or commuting to work, for instance.) They’re also great for interval training. Most people find ebikes so much fun that they’re more motivated to get out there and ride—and for greater distances than they typically traveled on their regular bikes. Electric bikes can also help you ease back into shape if you’re recovering from an injury or your strength has declined.

Many e-bike users find that removing obstacles such as hills, distances, wind, physical condition or limitations…means they use their e-bikes in situations where they might not have otherwise used a bicycle.  The simple fact is:  e-bikes are fun to ride and eliminate worries, so people end up riding them more often and looking forward to their next ride.  In fact, many electric bike users find themselves using their bike in situations they hadn’t even considered before. The net result is that they start to cycle more and more, and wind up exercising beyond their initial plans.

Q:  How fast does an electric bike go?

A:  Most e-bikes go the maximum federal legal limit of 20mph on throttle alone.  Of course, you can always go faster by pedaling along.  There are some e-bike models that go above the legal street limit on throttle.  These e-bikes are intended for off-road use only.

Q:  How far can an e-bike ride on a single charge?

A:  Typically most E-bikes can travel between 18-50 miles on a single charge.  Range depends on a bunch of factors—battery size and power, wind resistance, terrain, rider/cargo weight, and how much pedal assistance you provide. If you pedal more, and throttle lightly you will go farther.  If the load is heavy and you are riding up steep hills, you will go less far.  Other factors such as motor  & battery size combinations will affect range.  Basically, in general a larger motor will give you more torque/power.  This is important if your load is heavy, or the terrain is especially hilly.   But relating to distance, a higher watt motor will also draw more power from a battery, which will shorten the distance you could travel if the same battery were paired with a smaller watt motor.  To simplify, the Ah number on your battery, relates to distance.  The greater the Ah number, the longer the battery will run.  Learn more about e-bike batteries & motors here:

Q:  What about hills & headwinds?

A:  No need for spandex.  Whether you’re in a business suit or t-shirt, an e-bike will help you tackle hills and headwinds like a pro.  Life doesn’t have to be downhill.  An e-bike will make unavoidably steep hills and killer Chicago headwinds all but disappear.

Q:  Are e-bikes good for people with injuries, limited stamina, or disabilities?

A:  Many people with more limited mobility have found great joy in regaining their freedom and the ability to appreciate the great outdoors with electric bikes.  Riders of all ages are discovering the benefits and comfort of low-step unisex electric bicycles, where they choose the level of effort that goes into their cycling.

Q:  Will an electric bike help me keep up with my partner or others?

A:  Yes.  E-bikes are a great way for people of differing ability to enjoy cycling together.

Q:  Can an e-bike help me get through intersections quickly?

A:  Yes.  With an e-bike there is no need for that awkward start at an intersection.  Just twist and go.  Once you are through and up to a comfortable speed, you can start pedaling along.  Also, having a throttle on an e-bike is a great feature in case you need to get out of the way of traffic in a hurry.

Q:  Can I commute to work on an electric bicycle?

A:  With an electric bike, it’s easy to bike to work. You can get to work without busting a sweat, and arrive cool and in-style….in about half the time as a traditional bike.  Traffic snarls won’t be frustrating and stressful.  In fact, the worse the jam, the sweeter the ride. It doesn’t just feel like you’re “beating the system” …you are!  The commuters sitting in their cars will be wondering why they are IN TRAFFIC.  As you breeze by on your electric bike, you will realize, they are not IN TRAFFIC, they ARE TRAFFIC!

Even if you are a train commuter you might find an e-bike is just the right solution for you.  Many Chicago workers travel to work by rail.  They walk from their home to the station, board a train, and then walk to their job from union station or some other stop.  Bicycles aren’t allowed on trains during commuter hours…UNLESS your bike is in a bag.  Chicagoland Electric bikes sells some models that conveniently fit in a bag with wheels and a handle.  When you arrive at your office, just fold up your bike and wheel it up to your desk.  You have cut time, are looking good, and don’t even have to stress over bike theft.

Q:  I am an avid cyclist.  Why would I buy an e-bike?

A:  Even hardcore cyclist can appreciate the benefits of e-bikes.  E-bikes allow you to cut your commute time in half, and go much farther distances than typical.  Additionally, avid cyclist have been known to purchase e-bikes for their significant others, as an e-bike allows them to enjoy riding with their partner as keeping pace is no longer an issue.

Q:  Can you ride an electric bicycle in the bike lanes?

A:  Yes.  An e-bike enjoys every benefit that a traditional bicycle does…and more.  All our e-bikes (unless specified otherwise) meet with requirements and are classified as electric light vehicles under Federal law, and thereby they do not require a license and enjoy all the benefits of bicycles.  As states have the ability to regulate use as well, you should always check your local rules (DMV) regarding any additional local e-bikes restrictions.

Q:  Do you need to wear a helmet while riding an e-bike?

A:  While generally not required by law, for your own personal safety, we recommend you use a helmet, lights and reflecting gear, even if the law in your jurisdiction does not specifically require them.  Different states have different laws regarding bike helmets— but even if riding unprotected isn’t against the law in your state, there are still the laws of common sense to consider.

Q:  How old do you need to be to ride an electric bike?

A:  You must be at least 16-years-old to ride an electric bicycle.

Q:  Do you need a license or insurance to use an e-bike?

A:  The federal laws governing electric bikes do not require a special license or insurance to operate a low-speed electric bicycle.  The Federal Consumer Product Safety Act was amended in 2001 to define “low-speed” electric bicycles as having a motor of less than 750 watts and a maximum speed of 20 mph on a level surface. Since it is legally a bicycle, it is not bound by the laws that apply to motor vehicles.  Since additional the laws vary from state to state, please check with your local DMV or Secretary of State if you are unfamiliar with local electric bike laws.  Here is the federal law and some state regulation information:  EBIKE RULES & REGULATIONS.

Insurance is optional, but it’s not a bad idea to have it. Check out Spoke Bicycle Insurance for more information

Q:  What are the laws regulating electric bikes?

A: Federal law requires the following to classify an e-bike as a bicycle:  1. It must not exceed 20 mph on throttle alone with a 170 lb. person on flat terrain.  2.  It must have fully functioning pedals.  3.  The rider must be at least 16.  4.  The motor cannot be greater than 750 watts. 5.  It must weigh less than 100 lbs.  When following these rules an e-bike does not require any special license, or liability insurance, and can enjoy all the same benefits of a standard bike.  Consequently, electric bikes do not require a special registration, license, or insurance to operate. Moreover, they enjoy the same privileges as regular bicycles, such as being allowed to travel in available bike lanes.

Some states and county’s have additional rules for e-bikes.  Since the laws vary from state to state, please check with your local DMV or Secretary of State if you are unfamiliar with local electric bike laws it is always a good idea to check them out.  Use the helpful links on this page to connect with your local DMV.  Additionally, here is a link to the federal law regulating e-bikes.  If you still have questions, you can get in touch with us and we’ll point you in the direction to find out additional information for your state. 800-886-8852

Q:  How do I secure my electric bike?

A: Bike theft is a problem in many cities, but there are ways you can keep your ebike secure. Most electric bikes have built-in locks to secure expensive removable parts such as the battery.  It is also a good idea to invest in a quality insurance approved lock.  See our blog for tips on locking.  To maximize security, use a heavy-duty chain or U-lock that can stretch through the frame and wheels.  We will be offering a selection of Insurance-Approved Bicycle Locks and GPS tracking online soon.  In the meantime, feel free to call & pick our brains. 800-886-8852 or info@ChicagolandEbikes.com

Q:  Can an electric bike save me money?

A:  Whether you use an electric bike to augment your car use, or you rely on it completely for your transportation, an electric bike can save you a tremendous amount of money. For the cost of one gallon of gasoline at around $4.00, you can recharge your electric bike or scooter about 80 times @ .05 cents each time.  A fully charged battery will take you an average of 25 miles. 80 X 25 miles = 2,000 miles for $4!  You can also save on parking, registration fees, insurance & payments.  And what better dividend is there, than the health benefits & stress relief that your e-bike commute will bring you?

Q:  Are e-bikes eco-friendly?

A:  In addition to financial savings, using an e-bike for transportation can have a positive effect on the environment.  E-bikes emit no harmful emission into the environment, and if used to replace car trips can help reduce the carbon footprint.  You will be reducing pollution in the form of CO2, NOX, tire and brake lining fragments. More than 50% of all car trips are less than 3 miles.  This is a very reasonable commute for an e-bike rider.

Choosing to use an electric bike, electric car or electric scooter is an easy way to help reduce your carbon footprint.  Scientific opinion is nearly unanimous that global warming is already happening.  The average car emits one pound of CO2 for every mile driven.  For every 500 miles an electric bike is used in place of a car, approximately 25 gallons of fuel is saved & 500 less pounds of CO2 will be released into the atmosphere.

Q:  Why do electric bicycles typically cost more than traditional bikes?

A:  In addition to all the high-end brand name bicycle parts e-bikes are built with, electric bikes have motors, controllers, and batteries.  While battery technology has made huge advances in recent years (thanks largely to advancements in the auto industry), this technology is still expensive.  The battery is by far, the single most expensive component on an electric bike, followed by the motor.

Q:  What is the lifespan of the batteries?

A:  Battery life will vary depending on the type of battery you choose and how well you maintain it. All batteries have a maximum number of times that they can be fully charged and discharged (cycles).  There are two main types of batteries used on e-bikes SLA (standard lead acid) and Li-ion (Lithium Ion) batteries.  SLA batteries are heavy, cheap and only get 100-200 cycles.  Most e-bikes with quality Li-ion batteries get 600-1000 cycles (some more).  The cycles for each model we carry are listed along with other specifications.  You can find this information by exploring the selections and clicking on a particular model.  We also have a compare feature.

To extend the life of your battery, charge the battery regularly and promptly after each use. If you store your bike for prolonged periods of time, both the batteries and charger should be stored at temperatures above freezing and recharged every 4-6 weeks. The longer a battery sits uncharged, the faster the life will be reduced.  Learn more about battery care here:

Q:  How do I charge an electric bike?

A:  All new e-bikes come with a charger that plugs into any standard wall socket.  Most can be charged both while the battery is on the bike, and after removing the battery and bringing it indoors to your home or office.

Q:  How long does it take to charge the battery?

A:  Battery charge times will vary between manufacturers, models and battery types. For routine charging, expect anywhere from 2-6 hours for a full charge.  Charging can be started and stopped without damage to the battery.  Always use the charger that comes with your e-bike.

Q:  Can an electric bike recharge while pedaling?

A:  Not really, but you can preserve battery power by pedaling and extend your distance that way. Some electric bikes have regenerative braking capabilities, but they don’t often provide the smoothest rides. (Imagine pedaling while braking.) Regen is more commonly used as an anti-lock braking system when riding downhill.  Surprisingly, this is a common question. Again, in order for an electric bicycle to produce power, it would require resistance, making it harder to pedal. The energy savings would be minimal and riding your bicycle would be very difficult. If you used power instead, it would put more strain on the motor, depleting an equal amount of power to the power being generated. It's unrealistic and inefficient.

We do plan to offer solar charge options for your electric bicycle and are happy to share our knowledge of that.

Q:  How do you care for an electric bicycle battery?

A: Read the owners manual supplied with your bike. If you have questions you can always call us.  Here are some general tips:

  •  Some batteries recommend a break-in period:  This means fully charging your battery when you receive it, and then the first 3-5 times you use it only ride a few miles and then charge the battery.  This suggested to “balance” the battery cells…so that they all take a consistant charge and extend the battery cycles & range.

  •  Only use the charger that was supplied with your bike to charge your battery.

  •  Store bike, batteries, and charger in a dry place, out of the weather. And, only operate the charger in a dry place.

  • Generally charging a battery after each use is not a bad practice as long as you do not leave it on the charger well beyond the time it has fully charged.

  • Generally, charging a minimum of every 1-3 month's is required to keep a battery healthy & performing to full potential.  When storing a battery for long periods of time, typically charging to a 70% charge every 1-3 months is a good idea.   Always follow the instructions in your manual.

  • Impacts, high heat, sub freezing temperatures, water, high humidity, crushing, punctures, can all damage batteries, and should be avoided.

Q:  What size (watt) motor is best for an electric bicycle?

A:  Not all motors are built the same, but in general a larger watt motor will have more torque, or power.  In Europe motor size is limited to 250watts.  That is generally enough for most people, but can feel underpowered if it is not good quality or in certain circumstances.  If you weigh over 225 lbs., or typically ride in a very hilly area, or against strong headwinds…you may want a larger watt motor.  Aside from cost, the only drawback to a larger watt motor is that it will reduce the distance you can travel on a single battery charge.  A larger watt motor will draw more power from the battery.  That is why it is important to know how you want to use your electric bicycle and what you expect out of it.

Q:  What is the difference between throttle (TAG/POD) and pedal assist (PAS)?

A: There are two primary ways to activate the motor: pedal assist or throttle, with many of our ebikes both options are available. With pedal assist, the motor kicks in when you pedal to amplify your pedal strokes. Handlebar-mounted throttles allow for power on demand and don’t require pedaling. Throttles are loads of fun, but they’ll empty your battery much faster than pedal assist.

In reading the specifications of various electric bicycle models you might wonder what TAG, POD, & PAS mean?  These refer to the type of power mode the electric bicycles has.  Some are TAG (twist & go), or POD (power on demand) only.  TAG & POD mean the same thing, which is that to access the power you use a throttle (twist, thumb or button).  These types of electric bikes operate like a moped.  PAS (pedal assist or pedelac), mean that the power on that electric bike is accessed when you actually pedal.  With a PAS electric bicycle, you have a monitor mounted on your handlebars where you set the level of pedal assist power you want.  You can typically shift between levels as you ride and what to access more or less pedal power (generally 3-5 levels).  There are different types of pedal assist.  Some electric bicycles have both TAG & PAS.  These types of electric bikes are among our favorites, as both types of power modes have benefits.  Learn more about PAS/TAG and the benefits here>

Q:  How much does it cost to ride an electric bike?

A:  A few factors come into play (type of bike, battery efficiency, etc.). You can expect to pay normal bike maintenance costs—plus a few pennies per charge. You’ll also need to replace the battery every 2-5 years, depending on use. Replacement battery costs range from $300 to $1200.  Based on current average utility rates, it costs about $.05 to fully charge a Li-Ion electric bike battery.  A full charge can take you anywhere from 18-50 miles.

Q:  How much maintenance does an electric bicycle require?

A:  Aside from regularly charging your electric bicycle battery, an electric bike requires very little maintenance outside that of a traditional bicycle.  We recommend you regularly check your tire pressure and fill to the pressure level found labeled on the tires…typically 60 lbs.  This will not only protect your wheels but it will improve your range.  Chicagoland Electric Bikes also recommends a basic tune up once a year for casual riders ($95 plus parts), and a complete Tune Up for daily commuters or serious recreational riders ($175 plus parts).  Depending on use we also recommend a complete overhaul every 3-5 years, depending on use ($240-320 plus parts).  When compared to all the expenses related to maintaining a car, an electric bicycle is an excellent choice for alternation transportation, or to replace short car trips.

Q:  Can you ride an electric bicycle in the rain?

A:  Yes, but it’s about as fun as riding a regular bike in the rain.  For the most part e-bikes are water and weatherproof, however, they are not watertight.  If you submerge any e-bike in water, it will seep into the openings and likely cause damage. Electric bikes are fine in light rain or damp riding conditions, but not recommended during heavy down pours.  Like any standard bicycle you should care for your ebike after being wet, drying off water to prevent corrosion.  If you plan on riding in the rain on a regular basis, you might consider taking some extra steps to further waterproof your e-bike. This includes ensuring all electrical connections are wrapped in electrical tape and all connectors and exposed openings are sealed with clear silicone (especially the battery power connection).  Chicagoland Electric Bicycles offer buyers a weatherproofing service for an additional fee ($75).

Q:  Is an electric bike safe?

A:  An ebike rider is every bit as safe as a regular bike rider who takes reasonable precautions.  Because they’re more stable and have technology in place to prevent dangerous wheel lock-ups, electric bikes actually have an edge over regular bicycles when it comes to safety.  They can also move out of the way of traffic more quickly.  For safety tips, check out http://bicyclesafe.com/.

Q:  Can I convert my bike to an electric bike?

A:  Yes.  There are plenty of quality pre-built electric bikes available these days from many of the major bike manufacturers; but if you’re in love with your current bike and it fits you well, you may want to consider a conversion kit.  Most installations can be done with basic mechanical skills. Chicagoland Electric Bikes offers both onsite installation services and remote support for home installations.

We sell both rear & front wheel conversion kits that will fit just about every bicycle.  Keep in mind that a good conversion kit is not inexpensive, and that generally speaking a purpose built e-bike is generally a more economical option.  There are some cheap conversion kits out there but we do not recommend them.  E-bike conversion kits usually involve replacing the front or rear wheel with a hub-motor mounted wheel, and installing a battery holder and controller.

Chicagoland Electric Bicycles can help convert your bicycle into an e-bike, and we even sells e-bike trailers that can quickly and easily mount and remove from any bike.  There is also an electric child trailer as well, that again can be mounted to just about any bike.

Q:  What are the benefits of an electric bicycle?

A:

For commuters and getting around town:

For your health:

For Your Lifestyle:

For the environment:

For your bank account:

Q:  How many models & brands of e-bikes are there?

A:  There are many e-bike brands out there, and often the small brands with little information are simply individuals or companies who rebrand direct imports from Asia.  As these companies are unlikely to be around to service you in the years to come, we only deal with reputable companies, and the products we believe in.  Some of the products we sell, we like because they represent a value to the consumer, and allow a more affordable entry point so people can get out of their cars and onto e-bikes.  We recognize that even the least expensive e-bikes are still a consider investment, as even an entry-level e-bike is typically upward of $1,000.  We feel comfortable represent these brands as while they may not have all that the more costly brands do, they still offer a great value.

Q:  Where should I purchase an electric bike?

A:  We recommend that you shop locally for an e-bike.  Not only should you test ride the electric bike you are considering, but also you want to support the local businesses that allow you to do that.  That being said, we realize e-bikes are not available everywhere in the country just yet…and we want to help get people on e-bikes.  .  If you can’t find what you are looking for locally, we will give you the best price & service even from afar.  We have strong relationships with our partners, and if you should ever have an issue with a warranty claim Chicagoland Electric Bicycles will go to bat for you.  Chicagoland Electric Bicycles is backed by one of the largest e-bike retailers in the nation.  We have nearly 80+ electric bike models to choose from, including:  Step-through’s, Commuter’s, cruiser’s, mountain bikes, Fat tire, 3-wheel trikes, and Full size folding, as well as compact folding e-bikes.  There is an e-bike for every style and shape of rider.  We are an in-person and online retailer.  Our current retail location is in beautiful bike-friendly Madison Wisconsin, and will be opening soon in Chicago and Naples Florida.
